Lysander Cutler (1807-1866) was a businessman and Union Army officer during the American Civil War. He was born in New York and attended the United States Military Academy at West Point, graduating in 1829. Cutler resigned his commission as a second lieutenant in 1836 to pursue a career in business, becoming a successful merchant and banker in his home state.
At the outbreak of the Civil War, Cutler helped organize the 6th Wisconsin Infantry and was commissioned as its colonel. He participated in several major battles, including Antietam and Chancellorsville, and was wounded in action at Gettysburg. After the war, Cutler returned to Wisconsin, serving as a state senator and later as commander of the Wisconsin National Guard.
Cutler was known for his bravery, leadership, and strict discipline as a military commander. He was also respected for his integrity and honesty in his business and political dealings. Cutler died in 1866 from complications related to his wartime injuries.
